I love the range of topics covered in this book. I love the gumption of a group of kids pulling off a project like this toothpaste venture. Yes, the writing is dated but it also doesn't make a lot of sense. The grand scale of success is ridiculous. There is no mention of fluoride and the author clearly didn't do a lot of research about toothpaste or product manufacturing.More importantly, it's sexist. After reading this out loud to my kids, I still have no idea why Rufus is referred to as a "genius" and given all the credit for this company. There is no way he could have done it without his friends. Kathryn found the machine, bought the toothpaste tubes, found the mechanic to run the machine and act as a manager and basically contributed to every aspect of this company. In this sense of entirely glossing over her contributions, this book is horribly, horribly sexist.

I first read this book when I was about 8 years old. I had no idea the impact it would have on my career. What better story about a young entrepreneur who defies the odds, finds and creates a product, figures out how to sell it on a subscription basis and sets the competition reeling to try and grasp their market share back. As a kid, I was the one coming up with all the business ideas, from selling painted faux-gold rocks to starting a daily pickup recycling program (before it was cool.) I am now a successful business owner in my late 20s, and I still come back to this book from time to time to gain inspiration before launching a new product line or diving in to take a new business risk.Give this book to your kids, and read it again as a seasoned adult. Take it with a grain of salt and learn from the basics of business.

My nine year old read this outloud to me. It was a good book that may inspire young people. It addresses discrimination, price fixing of products, and sexism a little bit. The main character is a problem solver that doesn't like waste. This book may help a kid see the practical value of math and different ways a person might use that knoeledge.

This was a fun book to read with my 5th grade class. We even replicated the toothpaste recipe and brainstormed our own ideas for inventions, then followed up researching inventors. Those ideas sparked creative writing stories and artwork to support them. One of the main characters (kid inventor, Rufus) is also African American so this is also ideal for use during Black History Month as well.

A must-read for any entrepreneur spirited child. Get rid of the Harry Potter nonsense and get your children to read this good book and others like it.

I bought this book to add to the gift bag we distributed to the children attending the Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day event at my job. I had a copy left over, so I read it myself. What a nice story and example of diversity in action. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

As others have covered the plot synopsis, I will not repeat it.I am 40 years old, and read this book as a child. I had completely forgotten about it, but all of a sudden the fond recollection of it popped into my head recently. As my own chldren are now 11, 9 and 7 years old I thought it would be worth checking out again. All of my children loved it. My 11 year old read it on his own in about two days, and then my 9 year old and I took turns reading it aloud. While all the reviewers have mentioned the positive message about race relations, another positive message to me was the idea that even children can really accomplish something besides just sitting in school all day. Most of the adventure books we read involve wizards or fairies or talking animals, and while these are tons of fun they never give kids the sense that these stories relate directly to the lives they are leading. While the idea of kids opening up a factory and driving big companies out of business is of course a bit unrealistic, the fact is that kids really can go into "business" in smaller ways. My daughter (the 7 year old) is already organizing a yard sale of her baby stuff for when the weather warms up.I highly recommend this book.

Nice cute story. Little young for my 8-year old but she reads it over and over because she likes the story.
